1 + 1 = 3 on chalkboard

Happy October.  Welcome to fall.  A little breezy.  A little cooler.  Maybe a golf round or two before the end of the season?  Ok, that one is for me.

One of the things that I love about my job is the opportunity to talk with nonprofits, community organizations, and businesses about their impact in our community.  There are so many great stories from these groups telling us about kids they serve, how they are working with seniors, or just how they are working to make Manitowoc and Two Rivers a better place to live.  They inspire me to work harder to do the same thing.

There is a great saying that we use around the Y that I believe in.

1+1=3

What an interesting concept.  How can that be possible?  We see it every day around the Y.

Go back to what I just said about the great work of our organizations and businesses in our community.  What happens if we work together to make their impact greater?  It happens all the time.  Let me give you a couple of examples of where the Y tries to make this possible:

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Manitowoc County – What a great organization.  This group of volunteers and staff are working to mentor our youth to be stronger community members who are cared for and striving to be everything they can be.  We partner with them, and are working on a plan to do even more with them in the future, where their mentors and mentees (Bigs and Littles) have access to the Y when they are matched that day.  We see about 45 of these matches each week at the Y.  We also work together to provide kids an opportunity to go to camp at no cost and they help us with finding children who would benefit from our Y BREAK program.  1+1=3!

Painting Pathways Clubhouse – This organization is tirelessly working on behalf of those in our community who are battling mental health issues.  This has been a growing trend in our community, and nation, for years.  They provide a place to go, help with job placement, and provide food and other support to their members.  Stop on by their location on Washington Street to learn more.  The YMCA works with the Clubhouse in a couple of different ways.  First of all, we have provide job placement to help individuals get back into the workforce.  They are part of our staff and people aren’t aware of what is going on.  It is just something we do.  We also have been working with the Clubhouse this year to provide membership opportunities for their members.  One of the ways that has been proven to help with overall mental health, and I can personally attest to this, is good physical health.  Is there a better place than the Y?  I think not! 1+1=3!

Manitowoc  Public School District – We all know the responsibility that our District takes on for us to help make sure that our youth are taught and ready for life after school, wherever it leads them.  What you might not know is how much they partner with organizations around the community.  The Y is one of those.  First of all, we offer 6 classes a day of Four Year Old Kindergarten programs at the Y.  If you have been walking through the halls, you have seen the teachers and the kids heading to different parts of the building.  It is a unique experience for those youth.  They are taught the school district curriculum and get the benefit of the Y’s resources, like the facility or swimming lessons.  It is one of the highlights of my day to see the kids in the halls.  We also partner with the District on our Y BREAK program, as previous blogs have talked about, by sharing staff, space, and helping make sure that kids are maintaining grade level in reading over the summer months.  Last year’s results were stunning.  Normally, children who are financially challenged at home lose about a half of a grade level over the summer.  Last year our kids were flat!  A great accomplishment for the kids and we all benefit from it.  1+1=3!

The best part of this blog?  The previous list is only scratching the surface of the YMCA’s community benefit work.

And…

1+1 does equal 3!

See you at the Y!
