Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA Prioritizes Child Safety During Five Days of Action® Campaign

MANITOWOC, WI – The Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA is centering its commitment to child safety this April in recognition of Child Abuse Prevention and Safety Month. From April 21-25, 2025, the Y will participate in the Five Days of Action®—a national weeklong campaign designed to inspire adults to take meaningful steps to protect children from sexual abuse.

“There is nothing we do at the Y that is more important than this work,” said Julie Grossman, CEO of the Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA. “While April is when we talk about it the most, child protection is a year-round commitment. We’re inviting everyone in the community to join us in building a stronger safety net that prevents, stops, and responds to child abuse.”

The campaign centers around three powerful words: KNOW. SEE. RESPOND.

  • KNOW what prevention looks like and the right questions to ask of the organizations where your children spend time.
  • SEE the red flags that could indicate harmful intentions. The common image of a stranger lurking on a playground is rarely accurate—90% of child abusers are known to their victims. Recognizing the warning signs is essential.
  • RESPOND by validating a child’s experience and promptly reporting concerns to authorities.

The Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA is committed to continually enhancing its child safety efforts. This year, the Y is launching a dedicated, deep dive into becoming Praesidium Accredited—a year-long process that audits every aspect of the organization to ensure the highest standards of child safety.

The YMCA also conducts bi-annual “Know Your Score!” child abuse and prevention assessments, setting improvement plans based on the results. A Certified Praesidium Guardian on the YMCA staff team ensures that child safety remains a top priority, never overshadowed by other initiatives.

“As we prepare for summer—when children gather for activities and camps—it’s more important than ever to ensure the environments where children learn, grow, and play are safe,” Grossman continued. “We ask everyone to be vigilant. By embracing the principles of KNOW. SEE. RESPOND., we can create a safer community for all children.”
