November Impact Story
For Randy, the YMCA has always been more than just a place to work or play. He’s been a member since he was a kid, but it was when he returned as an adult to play basketball that he truly realized how much he loved the Y’s atmosphere. In 2018, he decided to join the Y team. “It seemed like a cool group of people and a great place to work,” Randy recalls.
Over the years, Randy has built countless relationships with both staff and members. “How many times do you get to go to a job where you can be yourself and actually enjoy it?” he says. “The fun family atmosphere makes it a welcoming place to be every day.” Randy thrives on the community spirit and the chance to positively influence the lives of others, particularly the kids who walk through the doors. “I love interacting with youth and helping them grow into positive adults. You build so many personal connections.”
Those connections go both ways. Randy genuinely cares about members and their lives outside of the Y, and he’s always ready to strike up a conversation or lend an ear. “You get that back tenfold just from talking with people,” he says. “I can relate to people of all ages, and it’s the people that make this place special.” He credits the Y's staff as well, describing them as a supportive and enthusiastic group who make each day enjoyable. “Enthusiasm breeds enthusiasm,” Randy says, and it’s clear he brings plenty of that energy himself.
One of the most visible ways Randy shares his quick wit is through the “joke of the day” board, which has become a staple at the Y. “I told so many terrible jokes that Julie got me the joke board!” he laughs. Randy’s favorite? “Why can’t Nostradamus get a job at the Y? Because we’re a non-prophet organization!"
As Randy celebrates his 60th birthday this month, we want to recognize his positive impact on the Y community. Thank you, Randy, for your enthusiasm, humor, and dedication to making the Y a place where everyone feels welcome!
