Grow It Forward Partners with the Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA to Teach Youth the Power of Growing Their Own Food

Manitowoc, WI – July 17, 2025

Grow It Forward and the Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA are teaming up to plant the seeds of food education and healthy habits in local youth. As part of this exciting collaboration, Grow It Forward is lending a Fork Farms hydroponic unit to the YMCA’s Energyze summer program, allowing 6th through 8th grade participants to grow their own leafy greens, herbs, and vegetables indoors.

The Fork Farms system, which uses hydroponic technology to grow produce efficiently and sustainably, will provide a hands-on opportunity for campers to explore how food grows—without soil or sun. YMCA campers will take part in planting, harvesting, and tasting what they grow, making connections between nutrition, sustainability, and their everyday lives.

“Empowering young people with the skills and knowledge to grow their own food is a powerful tool for lifelong health and wellness,” said Julie Grossman, CEO at the Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA. “We’re so grateful to Grow It Forward for bringing this opportunity to our campers.”

This initiative is part of Grow It Forward’s broader commitment to food education and community nutrition. In addition to the YMCA, Grow It Forward is also lending a Fork Farms unit to Jefferson Elementary School, expanding access to experiential learning and fresh produce throughout the summer and school year.

“Fork Farms units allow us to bring farming indoors, making it accessible year-round,” said Amber Daugs, CEO of Grow It Forward. “We’re excited to partner with organizations like the YMCA and local schools to nurture a new generation of food-literate youth.”

Together, the YMCA and Grow It Forward are fostering curiosity, connection, and healthy habits that will last well beyond the summer months.
