FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Walmart Spark Good Grant Helps YMCA Create Safe Harbor for Families Experiencing Domestic Violence

In partnership with InCourage, the Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA is expanding access to wellness, recreation and a welcoming community.

MANITOWOC, WI | October 2026 – In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA is proud to announce Safe Harbor, a new initiative developed in partnership with InCourage and supported by a $2,000 grant from Walmart through its Spark Good Local Grants program.

Safe Harbor provides YMCA memberships to individuals and families served by InCourage, Manitowoc County's domestic violence shelter. The initiative offers families experiencing some of life's most difficult circumstances an opportunity to reconnect, rebuild and find a sense of normalcy in a safe, welcoming environment.

Through Safe Harbor, participating families can enjoy the YMCA's swimming pools, wellness facilities, group exercise classes and recreational opportunities. For parents and children navigating significant life changes, these experiences can provide opportunities to spend quality time together, develop healthy routines and build connections within their community.

"For a family experiencing a crisis, something as simple as taking the kids swimming or spending an afternoon together at the Y can mean so much," said Julie Grossman, CEO of the Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA. "Everyone deserves a safe place to land. We're incredibly grateful to Walmart for investing in our community through its Spark Good program and helping us extend the Y's welcoming environment to families who need it most."

Walmart Spark Good Local Grants support nonprofit organizations addressing the unique needs of their communities. The program empowers local Walmart stores, Sam's Clubs and distribution centers to invest directly in organizations making a difference in the communities they serve.

The YMCA and InCourage have worked together to establish a process that makes YMCA memberships accessible to the families InCourage serves. Walmart's investment helps remove financial barriers to participation, creating opportunities for families to focus on their well-being and enjoy time together.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to recognize the impact of domestic violence and the importance of community partnerships in supporting survivors and their families.
